As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.

~Nelson Mandela

THE BEGINNINGS

In October of 2002, We started visiting a slum called Rocdoba Wadi with the intention of bringing about transformation in the lives of the people who live there. The story of this slum is no different from all the others. The men gamble all day and get drunk at night. Loud angry voices and wailing rend through the air at night as these men start quarrels amongst themselves or start beating up their wives and children. The women wake up very early in the morning to relieve themselves , under the cover of the dark, often in open spaces, then fill all the water their households need,

cook and go off to work in people’s homes in order to  eek out a living to just about keep body and soul together. They also have the burden of their many children whom they are unable to look after, let alone send them to school.

We wanted to make a difference. In the beginning we had only 7 to 8 people come to listen to us. But this number slowly grew to 40.We felt the best way to impact this slum is to work with the children, the next generation. So somewhere in April or May of 2003 we started the children’s work with 15 children but before the month was over we had 70 children. Some time later it became apparent that they could no longer have only one group so we split them up into 2 groups.
